Getting the Right Crop Cover
Crop and horticultural insurance is a specialist field. Cover is written by a small number of New Zealand insurers and specialist international underwriters, and terms vary considerably by crop type, region and the perils you need covered.
A specialist broker or insurer can help you get the right cover. They will assess your operation — crop type, hectares, region, historical loss experience — and match it to the markets that will write it.
What to have ready
- •Crop type and planted area
- •Region and any known exposure (hail, frost, wind, flood)
- •Approximate insured value or expected yield value
- •Previous claims history
- •Any existing farm or business insurance
Where to start
Go direct. Several insurers deal with growers directly. Their own sites are listed below.
Use a specialist broker. For multi-peril cover or international markets, a rural broker can reach underwriters you cannot approach yourself. Find one through IBANZ ↗
Check they are licensed. Anyone giving you insurance advice should appear on the Financial Service Providers Register ↗
